WordPress vs Custom Build: Which Is Right for Your Manchester Business?

Danny Smyth - Jul 5, 2026 - 2 min read
One of the most common questions I get from Manchester business owners is: should I use WordPress or get a custom-built website?

The answer depends on your budget, your needs, and your plans for growth. Let me break it down.

## When WordPress Makes Sense

WordPress is the right choice for about 80% of business websites. Here's why:

- It's cost-effective - you get a lot of functionality for less money
- You can update content yourself without calling a developer
- There are thousands of plugins for extra features
- It's SEO-friendly out of the box
- It's well-supported - if your developer disappears, another one can take over

Choose WordPress if you need a business site, blog, portfolio, or standard online shop.

## When You Need a Custom Build

A custom build (typically using a framework like Laravel) makes sense when:

- You need features WordPress can't handle (custom workflows, complex user roles, real-time data)
- You're building a SaaS product or web application
- You need an API for mobile apps or integrations
- Performance is critical and WordPress plugins are slowing you down
- You want complete control over every line of code

## The Hybrid Approach

Sometimes the best solution is a headless WordPress setup - WordPress for content management, with a custom front-end for maximum performance. This gives you the best of both worlds.

## My Recommendation

For most Manchester businesses, start with WordPress. It's faster to launch, easier to manage, and can grow with you. If you outgrow it, you can always migrate to a custom build later.
